Wall Area Calculator
Work out the area of a single wall in square metres — the figure you need for paint, wallpaper, plasterboard, cladding or feature walls. For whole rooms, the paint calculator handles four walls plus doors and windows at once.

How to use this calculator
- 1
Measure the wall's length at skirting-board level, wall to wall or corner to corner.
- 2
Measure the height from floor to ceiling — Australian ceilings are commonly 2.4 m, 2.7 m or 3.0 m.
- 3
Subtract doors and windows separately if you need net paintable area: a standard door is about 1.9 m² and a standard window about 1.4 m².
- 4
For feature walls, measure only the wall being treated.
How the calculation works
Area
Wall area = length × height. A 6 m wall at 2.7 m high is 16.2 m². Divide the room perimeter walls if you're doing each wall separately.
Worked example
A feature wall 5.5 m long with a 2.7 m ceiling.
Area = 5.5 × 2.7 = 14.85 m².
The wall is approximately 14.9 m² — at a typical 10 m²/L coverage and 2 coats, that's about 3 litres of paint.
Frequently asked questions
Should I subtract windows and doors?
For paint estimates, yes if they're large. Standard figures: door ≈ 1.89 m² (0.9 × 2.1 m), window ≈ 1.44 m² (1.2 × 1.2 m). For wallpaper and cladding, calculate the net area precisely — those materials cost too much to overbuy casually.
What's the difference between this and the paint calculator?
This gives one wall's area; the paint calculator takes a whole room (four walls), subtracts doors and windows, applies your coats and coverage, and outputs litres of paint. Use this for single-wall or exterior work.
